May – The Month of Mary
While Mary the Mother of God is revered and celebrated all year long, May is a special month to celebrate the “Queen of Heaven.”
May has been Mary’s month since the medieval period, when May was considered the end of winter and the start of a new season of growth. Without Mary giving birth to Jesus, all the events that followed: Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection wouldn’t have happened.

Traditions to honour Mary include processions, crowning a statue of Mary with a garland of flowers and reciting the rosary in public.
Catholics believe that when we honour Mary we are honouring God who gave her all she has and is. All her greatness flows from her closeness to Christ. As she herself says: “The Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is His name“, (Luke 1:49).
